Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (APJ) Abdul Kalam, fondly known as the “Missile Man of India,” was one of India’s most esteemed scientists and statesmen. Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam came from a humble background. Early Life and Education

Kalam’s upbringing in a modest household instilled values of hard work and perseverance. He graduated in physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and later pursued aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT).

As a Scientist

Dr. Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and later the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he played a pivotal role in developing India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). His leadership in missile development earned him the nickname “Missile Man of India.”

He was instrumental in the success of India’s nuclear tests in 1998 (Pokhran-II), showcasing the nation’s capability in defense technology.

As the President of India

In 2002, Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India, serving until 2007. Known as the “People’s President,” he connected deeply with the youth and emphasized education, innovation, and national development.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Kalam received numerous honors, including:

  • Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian award)
  • Padma Bhushan
  • Padma Vibhushan

Legacy
